Weekly Planning Meeting, 9/18

Highlights 9/18:

Goodness, lots of congratulation are in order. The big congratulations 
this week go to rob, bill, rick, chris, dean, hugh, hill, and 
roland. 

Bill has garbage collection working correctly  across 
the lan, one of the pieces of xanadu that I haven't mentioned 
much here, but which is very important. Dean implemented 
several of the pieces needed for garbage collecting 
berts and stamps from the disk, including the tree walk for stamp 
deletion. 

Rick implemented the textdoc model and the linkdoc model for 
Montage. Rob, meanwhile, found the bug in continuations in elk 
scheme that was driving several people crazy. 

Roland ran ceran over all of xanadu for the first time, giving 
us some idea of just how bad it is going to be to try to use 
FeBe from C programs; my assessment is, it will be easier than 
my worst fears, but hard enough to still be worried (uh, worrying 
goes on MY list of tasks; for the moment, everyone else should 
just keep implementing :-). 

Hugh finished the first round of making incremental text redisplay 
work; it is now good enough so we can move on to other things; 
hopefully round two won't be needed till Release 2 of Tapestry.
And chris is now able to extract primitive moves from the xanadu 
version compare process; as some may remember from my writeup 
about merge algorithms, this is the first step on the way to 
building the Tapestry document comparison/merge window.

Mr. hill has been getting "7 percent per day" performance improvement; 
over the course of the past week, this has added up to almost 
a  doubling of the server's performance. If he can keep this 
steady pace up, we figure the server will be fast enough to be 
useful in about ten weeks :-)

Congratulations also go to roger and michael. Michael has snarf 
receivers written and in testing. And roger is now able to insert 
text in an Open Look window and store it in the backend (though, 
ah, it doesn't quite show up on the screen right yet :-)
