Well, there are of course lots of ways you could do this, but how's this
for one way:

Date --- Cat1 --- Cat2 --- Cat3 --- Cat4 --- Cat5 --- Cat6 --- Desc
  |                 |        |        |                          |
<date1> --------- <amt1> ------------------------------------- <desc1>
  |                          |        |                          |
<date2> --------------------------- <amt2> ------------------- <desc2>
  |                          |                                   |
<date3> ------------------ <amt3> ---------------------------- <desc3>

(etc.)

Now you will be able to see all the amounts for any given category together,
or go through the complete list by date or description.  And when viewing
by row, you'll just see it as the three fields for any given item.
